What the free plan actually gives you
Poe is an aggregator: GPT, Claude, Gemini and a long tail of community bots sit behind one interface. Free users get a daily points allowance, and each message deducts points proportional to the model cost, so cheap models last much longer.
The value is comparison. You can ask the same question across three models in one place and see which one actually handles your task, without three subscriptions. The downside is that you are always a layer removed from the provider.
Where it breaks
- Points run out quickly on premium models
- Community bots vary wildly in quality
- Feature lag behind first-party apps
What we would use instead
If the limits above are a problem, the closest free substitutes are ChatGPT and Claude. They are not identical — each one trades something different — but all of them let you finish a job without paying.

Questions people actually ask
How do the free points work?
You get a daily allowance that resets every 24 hours. Each message deducts points based on which model you use, so premium models burn through it fast.
Is Poe cheaper than subscribing directly?
For occasional multi-model use, yes. For daily heavy use of one model, a direct subscription is better value.
Can I build my own bot?
Yes, with a prompt and optional API key, and publish it for others to use.
