What the free plan actually gives you
Claude handles long inputs better than most free chatbots — dropping in a whole contract or a repository file usually works without truncation warnings. The free plan still has a rolling usage limit, and once you hit it you wait.
The practical difference from ChatGPT: fewer features, better reading. No image generation, no plugins, no browsing on the free tier in most regions. If your task is "understand this long thing", it is worth the trade.
Where it breaks
- Rolling limits reset on a schedule you cannot control
- No image generation or plugins on the free plan
- Smaller ecosystem of third-party integrations
What we would use instead
If the limits above are a problem, the closest free substitutes are ChatGPT and Gemini. They are not identical — each one trades something different — but all of them let you finish a job without paying.

Questions people actually ask
How long a document can I paste for free?
Roughly 200 pages of text, though the free tier trims this during high load. Very large files are better split.
Does Claude train on my conversations?
By default consumer chats may be used for training; you can opt out in settings. Business plans are excluded.
Is there a free API?
No. API access is billed per token from the first request.
