ChatGPT — free plan, limits and what it is good for
The default chatbot. The free tier is genuinely useful, but there is no free API and no way to remove the usage caps.

| Account required | Email or Google account |
| Watermark on free output | No |
| Limits | Message caps reset every few hours; no API credits |
| Platforms | Web, iOS, Android, desktop |
| Best for | One-off questions, drafting, explaining code |

What the free plan actually gives you
The free plan gives you the full chat interface and file uploads, which covers most casual use. What it does not give you is a predictable number of messages: the cap is dynamic and drops during peak hours, so a workflow that worked yesterday can stop mid-task today.
For anything repeatable — batch rewriting, structured extraction, anything you would script — the free tier is the wrong tool. You need API access, and that is billed from the first token. Budget for it as a software cost, not a subscription.
Where it breaks
- Message caps change with load, so you cannot plan around them
- No API access on the free plan
- Conversation history lives in their account, not yours
What we would use instead
If the limits above are a problem, the closest free substitutes are Claude and Perplexity. They are not identical — each one trades something different — but all of them let you finish a job without paying.

Questions people actually ask
Is ChatGPT free forever?
The free tier has been available since launch and OpenAI treats it as the acquisition funnel, but the model behind it lags the paid tiers and the message cap is not published.
Can I use free ChatGPT output commercially?
Yes, output belongs to you under their terms, but you are responsible for checking it — hallucinated citations and invented statistics are common.
What is the cheapest way to get API access?
Pay-as-you-go from the API dashboard. Light use often costs less than a Plus subscription.
