Perplexity — free plan, limits and what it is good for
Answer engine, not a chatbot. Worth it if you need sources you can click, and the free Pro-search allowance is small.

What the free plan actually gives you
Every answer carries numbered sources, and that changes how you use it: you read the citations instead of trusting the paragraph. For anything you will publish, that is a real advantage over a plain chatbot.
The free plan lets you run out of Pro searches fast — the counter resets daily, and once it is gone you drop to a weaker model that answers from a single retrieval pass. If research is the main use, this is the one subscription worth paying for.
Where it breaks
- Free Pro-search allowance is exhausted in minutes
- Occasionally cites low-quality aggregator pages
- No file upload on the free tier in most regions
What we would use instead
If the limits above are a problem, the closest free substitutes are ChatGPT and Gemini. They are not identical — each one trades something different — but all of them let you finish a job without paying.

Questions people actually ask
How many free Pro searches do I get?
A small daily allowance, typically single digits, that resets every 24 hours. The exact number changes.
Can I use Perplexity output in an article?
Use the cited sources, not the summary. Rewriting Perplexity prose verbatim is both a copyright and a quality problem.
Does it work without an account?
Basic search works signed-out; saving threads and using Pro features requires an account.
