What the free plan actually gives you
Upload an image and it returns a cutout in seconds with clean edges on hair and fur. The free output is capped at about 0.25 megapixels — fine for a thumbnail, useless for print or a product page.
Credits are consumed per full-resolution download, and the price drops with volume. The API is genuinely good, but the free tier is a demo, not a workflow. For a handful of images a month, paying per image is cheaper than a subscription.
Where it breaks
- Free output is low resolution only
- Credits expire on some plans
- Edge cases with transparent or reflective objects
What we would use instead
If the limits above are a problem, the closest free substitutes are TinyPNG and Canva. They are not identical — each one trades something different — but all of them let you finish a job without paying.

Questions people actually ask
Is Remove.bg free?
The preview is free but capped at low resolution. Full-size downloads consume credits.
Can I remove backgrounds in bulk?
Yes, through the API or the desktop app, both credit-based.
How does it compare with Canva?
Canva includes background removal on paid plans and is more convenient for design work; Remove.bg has better edge quality on difficult subjects.
