Alibaba — free plan, limits and what it is good for
Free to browse and request quotes. The cost is minimum order quantities, not the platform.

What the free plan actually gives you
Buyer accounts are free and unlimited: you can search suppliers, request quotes and message factories without paying anything. Alibaba monetises the seller side, so there is no listing fee to work around.
The real barrier is MOQ — most factories will not produce twenty units, and sample orders often carry a premium plus shipping. Treat the platform as a directory of manufacturers, and verify independently before wiring money.
Where it breaks
- Minimum order quantities block small tests
- Supplier quality varies enormously
- Trade assurance is not a guarantee of quality
What we would use instead
If the limits above are a problem, the closest free substitutes are Fiverr and Shopify. They are not identical — each one trades something different — but all of them let you finish a job without paying.

Questions people actually ask
Is it free to buy on Alibaba?
Yes. Buyers pay nothing to the platform; you pay the supplier for goods and shipping.
Can I order a single sample?
Often yes, but at a higher unit price plus shipping. Always confirm the sample cost in writing before paying.
How do I avoid scams?
Use Trade Assurance, pay by card or escrow rather than bank transfer, and verify the company licence independently.
